Lotterywest Australia Day Skyworks is 26 January 2008 ...
I watched my first Skyworks show in 2000 from South Perth foreshore. I was then living on the corner of Forest and Hensman - a real stone's throw. The show was brilliant. Aside from the fireworks, I saw another fantastic show -- amidst a bunch of drunken yobos egging him on, a bare-chested young man started climbing the massive flag pole on the foreshore. He was doing a pretty good job of it too, if not for the almost-emptied cans of beers being thrown at him, making the flagpole slick and slippery.
Several years later, I was on vacation with my family in Singapore. This was probably 2003/4. I picked up the local papers and read that there was a riot in Perth - during the Lotterywest Skyworks show! What fantastic marketing Perth has in Asia! Idiot reporters. Turns out it was just another bunch of drunken louts -- no real riots at all.
However, there are a few things that you can do to help your family when you visit the Skyworks show. Here are a few tips:
1. It's hard to keep an eye out for your children if you've just put away a slab of VB and can't keep your eyes open! Keep them close - your children, not your eyes.
2. Think your little ones are going to run away from you? Write your mobile number on their arms with a permanent marker. Tell them that if they get lost, this is the number where kidnappers can call to make ransom demands. I mean, they can call you to tell you how to get back your children.
3. Bring a friend. Bring a few friends. Designate one the babyskipper.
4. Bring enough snacks and toys for the children so that they don't get bored with everything else before they see the fireworks. Bring mosquito repellent to guard against the midgies.
5. Stay away from the South Perth flagpole. I understand yobbos love gathering there and doing what yobbos do best (climb the flagpole when they get drunk).
6. Make sure you've got enough gas in your car because it's going to take you a long time to get out of South Perth.
7. Make sure the children have at least three toilet breaks OR they're going to wish they were abducted instead of facing your growing frustration!
